<image:title>About Us - Unlock Public Health</image:title>
<image:caption>The Citizens’ Public Health Literacy (CIPHER) project aims to decode public health concepts through community-informed curriculum, health messaging, and the provision of support to community organizations. Our work introduces lay audiences to public health concepts and teaches them to unlock their full health potential as we make knowledge and resources, that are far too often limited to institutions of higher learning, free and accessible. Here at CIPHER, we seek to dismantle the barriers that institutions of knowledge built with prestige and reputation that can intimidate or alienate a broader audience. We envision a future where sustainable and equitable platforms for community-informed knowledge sharing are commonplace and CIPHER can be a small part of making that dream a reality. Through our multidisciplinary teams comprised of talented graduate students and faculty advisors we believe we can utilize evidence based methods to make learning more equitable and accessible. Though COVID-19 has undoubtedly revealed the challenges that are faced in our communities everyday, we believe that we can be a part of a collective recovery. CIPHER will work together with communities to help strengthen their many assets and seek to identify and create solutions for their needs. Together we can build a future where equity is less of a dream and more of a reality.</image:caption>

She has a B.S. from Monmouth University in Biology with a concentration in Molecular Cell Physiology. At Monmouth University, Stephanie was in the Honors School and had a minor in Sociology. She completed her Honors Thesis in the field of Sociology and conducted a research study that explored college students’ perceptions of gender inequality in higher education. Following her undergraduate education, Stephanie earned an M.A. from Stony Brook University in Medical Humanities, Compassionate Care and Bioethics, and worked as a medical scribe in the Emergency Department at Stony Brook University Hospital. Her Capstone research project for this graduate program examined the implications of the electronic medical record on healthcare, including its effects on patient populations and its contribution to the perpetuation of health disparities. The culmination of these academic experiences fostered her interest in public health and led her to Columbia University to pursue an MPH. While at Mailman, Stephanie has been involved in the Students for Environmental Action organization and she will be a TA for an Environmental Health Justice undergraduate course in her second year. Currently, Stephanie is interested in the linkages between susceptibility to environmental exposures and social determinants of health, as well as work that addresses the disproportionate impact that public health crises have on vulnerable populations.</image:caption>

She received her Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Biology from Columbia University, where she became involved in urban green projects and plant ecophysiology research. In her junior and senior years, she focused her research on green roofs as a way of reducing storm-water runoff that can lead to combined sewer overflow in cities with combined sewage systems, culminating in a senior thesis on differences in water-use for plant species on green roofs in upper Manhattan and the Bronx. After graduating, she continued this work at the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation through a larger study in a greenhouse setting, which identified plant species best suited for use on Parks Department green roofs. Following this experience, she worked for two years as a Research Assistant and Fellowship Coordinator at the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at CUIMC. In this capacity, she collaborated on clinical research projects about childhood obesity, premature adrenarche, and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, resulting in five co-author publications in academic journals. She participated in grant-writing for the pediatric endocrinology fellowship program’s T32 grant and coordinated fellowship evaluation and admissions processes. Since 2016 she has volunteered as a rape crisis and domestic violence survivor advocate with the Crime Victims Treatment Center, work that kindled in her an interest in violence prevention. Since coming to Mailman, this interest has led to her participation in a Firearm Mapping project in collaboration with the Rutgers Center on Gun Violence Research. In keeping with her ongoing interest in environmental science, she also works in Professor Marianthi-Anna Kioumourtzoglu’s environmental epidemiology lab on environmental mixtures methodology research.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Te Asia Hunter Community Needs Assessment Task Group Lead & Co-Founder, she/her/hers Te Asia Hunter is a current Master of Public Health (MPH) candidate at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. She is in the Department of Sociomedical Sciences (SMS) with a certificate in Chronic Disease Epidemiology. She received her Bachelor of Sciences in Biomedical Sciences with a minor in sociology and a specialization in pre-medical studies from Quinnipiac University in 2019. Transitioning from the diversity that is characteristic to New York to a racially homogenous environment in the midst of Trump’s election to presidency, Colin Kaepernick’s anti-police brutality protest, and several instances of state-sanctioned violence targeting Black people that attracted national attention, it was at Quinnipiac where Te Asia grew increasingly frustrated at the lack of consideration for how social structures and inequities impact science and medicine. As a first-generation college student, she had to navigate many experiences by herself and sought to inform high school students nearby her college about the many career options available to them. She received firsthand experience as to how race and class affects the healthcare system. During her sophomore year, she shadowed her local gynecologist where she noticed the disparity in sexual education and health between young minority girls/women and white girls/women. During her junior year, she traveled to Barbados and worked with the country’s Heart and Stroke Foundation. There, she observed that the efficiency of the Foundation’s outreach was poorer amongst lower-class residents- a group that could’ve benefited most from the organization’s resources. Te Asia’s research interests include incarceration as a public health issue, the cycle of victimization amongst incarcerated women, racial disparities in cancer rates as a result of environmental racism, the effect of seeing the consistent murder of Black people in the age of social media activism on the psyches of Black people, and health equity and justice.</image:caption>

After coming to Mailman, Shreya has been able to further her interests through the SSRH certificate and in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, she was a part of the Columbia arm of the Community Student Service Corps as a part of the Hero Meals Social media team which is working to provide meals to the frontline workers. She is currently working with a team of researchers at Columbia University Department of Pediatrics and Psychiatry studying the effect of COVID-19 on mother and newborn bonding. Her career and research interests include maternal and child health, sexual health, health promotion and health communication.</image:caption>
